Toyota may be known mostly for their advancements in green car tech. However, this auto maker is also a fan of racing. For over 10 years, the company has supplied body stylings for NHRA Drag Racing and Funny Car competitions. This year, a Toyota Camry body will be used. Yes, it's official: Toyota is taking over the drag race world once again.
These Funny Cars are way more powerful (and extremely different inside) than those street legal Camry's found at Jones Toyota in Bel Air, MD. This is not just about design, Toyota will have an advertising presence at ESPN2 broadcasts of NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing.
"Toyota's increasing involvement in NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing is a clear indicator of the return on investment at both the league and team level," said NHRA president Tom Compton. "Toyota has a proven track record around sponsorship activation, and to have their involvement as an event-rights sponsor of one of the most prestigious stops on the NHRA Full Throttle Series is very exciting."1
The Japanese auto maker began involvement with NHRA in 2002, thanks to the Celica-based Funny Car. Their first win came in 2004, at the O'Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Winter Nationals.
Since then, Toyota-sponsored cars have earned a multitude of NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series victories, as well as Full Throttle World Championships in 2010 and again in 2011.
